What Is an Adventure Elopement? (And What It Definitely Isn’t)

If you’ve landed here after Googling “what is an elopement?” or “what is an adventure elopement?”—welcome. You’re not behind. You’re not “doing it wrong.” And you definitely don’t need to suddenly become a rock climber to belong here.

An adventure elopement isn’t about how extreme your wedding day is. It doesn’t have to involve cliff jumping, sky diving, or hiking ten miles before breakfast (unless you want it to). It’s about how intentional it is.

At its core, an elopement means choosing a wedding day that prioritizes you, your relationship, and how you actually want to spend your time, without pressure, performative traditions, a packed schedule that leaves no room to breathe, or expectations that don’t fit.

What is an Elopement, Really?

An elopement is a wedding day that focuses on meaning over production. A day that prioritizes you, your relationship, and how you want to spend your time.

It doesn’t automatically mean:

  • A courthouse ceremony
  • Something rushed or “cheap”
  • Running away in secret
  • Skipping celebration altogether
  • Going to the Chapel in Las Vegas

Instead, an elopement means:

  • You’re choosing experience over expectation
  • You’re intentionally designing your day
  • You’re not obligated to host, entertain, or perform

Some elopements include guests. Others don’t.  Some are one day. And some are spread across a weekend. Some look quiet and cozy. Others look like a full-on experience.

There is no single “right” way to elope and that’s the point.

So… What Makes an Elopement an Adventure Elopement?

An adventure elopement is simply an elopement that includes activities that feel meaningful to you.

Yes—sometimes that looks like hiking or paddle boarding. But just as often, it looks like simply slowing down.

An adventure elopement can include:

  • A short hike to a waterfall
  • Paddle boarding on a calm lake
  • A picnic after your ceremony
  • A candlelit dinner at your Airbnb
  • Getting matching tattoos
  • Hitting up the Arcade Bar in town
  • Brewing hopping with your favorite people
  • A campervan road trip on the Blue Ridge Parkway
  • Watching the sunset and doing absolutely nothing else

Adventure doesn’t mean adrenaline. It means presence.

The Biggest Misconception About Elopements

One of the most common fears I hear is: “I love the idea of eloping, but I don’t want it to feel empty.”
And lucky for you, elopements don’t feel empty when they’re intentionally planned (where I can assist!)

They feel empty when couples are told:

  • “Just show up and sign papers”
  • “You don’t need a timeline”
  • “You don’t need help planning”

An elopement is still your wedding day. It deserves thought, pacing, and care.

When planned well, elopements feel full. Full of connection, space and moments you actually remember (and care about).

What Makes an Elopement Feel Intentional?

Intentional elopements are built around time, not tradition.

That looks like:

  • Space to actually talk to each other, laugh, slow down
  • Activities you’d choose on a normal, perfect day
  • A timeline that isn’t rushed
  • Locations that support the experience—not just the photos

You’re not cutting corners. You’re cutting out the noise.

Adventure Elopement Ideas (That Aren’t Extreme)

If you’re in the early dreaming stage, here are some gentle, real-life ways couples build adventure into their elopement days—especially across the Southeast:

  • Morning coffee + vows at your Airbnb in the Smokies
  • A short forest or waterfall hike in Northern Georgia
  • Paddle boarding or kayaking
  • Brewery hopping after your ceremony in Asheville, NC
  • A picnic with handwritten vows
  • Butterfly releases or symbolic rituals
  • A scenic drive + sunset portraits along the Parkway

The “adventure” is choosing a day that actually feels like you.

How I Help You Plan an Adventure Elopement (Without Overwhelm)

Most couples don’t elope because they love planning. They elope because they want something simpler and more meaningful.

That’s where I come in. (Hi!)

When you work with me, I help with:

  • Location scouting based on accessibility, vibe, and season
  • Timeline planning so your day flows naturally
  • Activity ideas that fit your energy level
  • Vendor recommendations if you want hair, florals, or officiating
  • Logistics guidance so nothing feels last-minute or stressful

Check out this blog for my top recs for an adventure elopement in Georgia.

You don’t have to figure this out alone and you don’t have to do anything extreme to justify eloping.

Is an Adventure Elopement Right for You?

An elopement might be right for you if:

  • You value presence over performance
  • You want your wedding day to feel calm, not chaotic
  • You care more about memories than expectations
  • You want flexibility, freedom, and intention

And if you’re still unsure? That’s okay. Elopements aren’t about running away. They’re about choosing yourselves on purpose. I wrote a blog all about the difference between a micro wedding and elopement here.

Whether your adventure looks like a paddle board, a picnic, or a quiet dinner somewhere beautiful, your elopement gets to be built around what matters most: time, connection, and intention.

If you’re ready to explore what that could look like for you, I’m here to help you dream it up and plan it well. Get in touch here.
