Whether you’re eloping in winter snow, spring blooms, or the warmth of summer, the key to an unforgettable and comfortable elopement is dressing for the weather and activities you might decide to do on your elopement day.

In this guide, I’ll walk through the best clothing choices for every season, location, and adventure you might have in Tennessee. By learning more about the unique characteristics of each spot and season, you can be sure that you not only look stunning but also feel comfortable and prepared for anything!

Spring (March – May): Embracing Spring

Spring in Tennessee is a time of renewal, with wildflowers in bloom and the weather starting to warm up. Depending on where you choose to elope, you could be surrounded by vibrant blossoms or lush green forests. Spring offers cooler mornings and evenings, especially at high elevations in the mountains with warmer temperatures on sunny afternoons. Spring is also known for pop up showers so having a raincoat and quick drying clothing can help keep you dry and comfortable throughout the day!

Bridal Attire:

  • Lightweight Fabrics: Since spring temperatures range from 50°F to 70°F, consider breathable fabrics like chiffon or lace. These materials will keep you cool if the day warms up, but they also have enough texture and weight to look lovely in a garden or wooded setting.
  • Layering Options: Bring along a light shawl, flannel, rain coat, or wrap in case of cooler mornings or evenings, especially in mountainous areas where temperatures can fluctuate.
  • Footwear: If you’re planning a hike or walk on uneven terrain (such as in the Smokies), opt for stylish but sturdy shoes. Sneakers or hiking boots are great options. If you plan to stay in the city, strappy sandals or flats are a comfortable choice.

Groom’s Attire:

  • Suit or Lightweight Jacket: A light linen or cotton suit will keep you cool and comfortable without sacrificing style. Pair it with a simple boutonnière of seasonal flowers. Don’t forget a waterproof rain jacket in case there is a pop up rainstorm!
  • Footwear: Sturdy but stylish shoes like hiking or dress boots are perfect for a mix of walking and celebrating.
  • Accessories: Consider a bow tie or suspenders to add a whimsical touch that’s popular for spring weddings.

Summer (June – August): Warm Weather and Adventure

Tennessee summers can be hot and humid, with temperatures often reaching into the 80s or even low 90s. Summer elopements in Tennessee are perfect for adventurous couples who want to enjoy the outdoors, waterfalls, or lake. Kayaking, boating and paddleboarding are popular summer elopement activities. The best way to beat the heat is early morning or evening ceremonies to avoid the midday heat.

Bridal Attire:

  • Light and Breezy: Choose breathable, lightweight fabrics like silk or lightweight satin to avoid overheating. A sheath dress or flowy A-line gown will help with mobility and air circulation.
  • Sleeveless or Off-the-Shoulder: A sleeveless gown or an off-the-shoulder dress is ideal for staying cool while looking stylish.
  • Footwear: If you’re planning to explore waterfalls or lakes, opt for sandals like chacos or sturdy non-slip hiking boots from brands like Merrell, Danner or Blundstone. For city elopements, cute flats or wedges work best.

Groom’s Attire:

  • Lightweight Suit: Linen or seersucker suits are ideal for summer elopements. They breathe well and won’t make you feel too hot.
  • Casual Options: For those hottest of summer days consider ditching the suit jacket and opt for dress pants with a button up shirt.
  • Footwear: Stylish sneakers, or hiking boots with wool socks to help wick away sweat are great choices for staying cool and comfortable.

Fall (September – November): Cozy and Romantic

Fall in Tennessee is a stunning time to elope. The foliage turns brilliant shades of orange, yellow, and red, creating a romantic backdrop for your ceremony. Temperatures start to cool down, but it’s still relatively mild, especially in the early fall months and on sunny days.

Bridal Attire:

  • Layers for Comfort: Fall temperatures can vary, so think layers—perhaps a lightweight jacket, flannel, or a wool shawl to keep you warm during early morning or late evening ceremonies.
  • Rustic and Romantic Styles: Opt for a dress with heavier lace, velvet, or satin to give a more luxurious, autumnal feel. Long sleeves or 3/4 sleeves are often popular choices.
  • Footwear: Boots are a great choice for an outdoor or rustic elopement. Hiking boots, especially in suede or leather, look stunning and are practical on uneven ground. If you aren’t planning on hiking, consider cowboy boots to tie in the southern vibes!

Groom’s Attire:

  • Layered and Stylish: A wool suit or tweed jacket pairs beautifully with the fall season, giving off a cozy yet elegant vibe. A fall-colored tie or pocket square can tie everything together.
  • Footwear: Leather shoes, Blundstones, Redwings, or hiking boots are the best choice for this season, adding a rugged charm to the groom’s look while being practical for walking outdoors.

Winter (December – February): Intimate and Cozy

Winter in Tennessee can be chilly, with temperatures ranging from 30°F to 50°F. Snow is not always guaranteed, but does often occur especially at higher elevations in the mountains. The crisp air and fewer crowds create an intimate and peaceful atmosphere for elopements.

Bridal Attire:

  • Warm and Stylish Layers: Choose a dress that has a bit of structure to protect against the cold—think satin with a faux fur or wool stole. You can also go for a high-neck gown with long sleeves or a cape for warmth without sacrificing elegance. You can also layer warm leggings under your dress and potentially under your top depending on the dress style. Don’t forget accessories to keep you warm sure as gloves, a scarf, and earmuffs!
  • Boots or Heeled Boots: If you’re eloping in the snow or on cold ground, winter boots that are fashionable and functional are a great choice. Knee-high leather boots look elegant and provide warmth as well. I always recommend any type of waterproof boot to avoid cold and wet feet!

Groom’s Attire:

  • Heavier Fabrics: A wool suit or tweed jacket will keep you warm, while still looking dapper. Consider a vest or scarf for extra warmth. For those extremely cold days and higher elevations, adding baselayers under your suit can provide extra warmth!
  • Footwear: Leather boots or insulated dress shoes are perfect for winter elopements, offering both style and comfort.

Final Tips for Dressing for Your Elopement in Tennessee

  • Consider Comfort and Moveability: Whether you’re hiking up a mountain, standing by a lake, or exploring a city, make sure your attire allows for movement and comfort. Think- a flowy gown that won’t restrict you!
  • Weather Preparedness: Tennessee’s weather can be unpredictable, so always check the forecast and bring additional layers or accessories like scarves, hats, rain jackets, or gloves if necessary.
  • Customizable Accessories: Small details like a bridal jacket, custom jewelry, or a stylish boutonnière can help you stand out while still reflecting your unique style and personality.

I hope these tips help you plan what to wear for your big day. It’s important to not only look your best, but also feel as comfortable as possible so you can focus all of your attention on your love for one another and the outdoors!

Happy eloping!
