Here’s your step-by-step guide to help you prepare for an unforgettable elopement in the Peach State.

1. Narrowing Down Your Elopement Location

Although not necessary, having an idea of what you would like your elopement day to look like can help when searching for your photographer. Finding the perfect elopement photographer for your elopement day is important because they will assist with every step of planning your elopement to make it easy and fun for you!

Georgia boasts a variety of beautiful elopement spots, each with its own unique nature and beauty. Consider what kind of vibe you want for your ceremony—do you want lush forests, sprawling fields, waterfalls, mountain overlooks, beaches or a Southern city with cobblestone streets and old oak trees?

Popular Elopement Locations in Georgia:

• Savannah: Known for its moss-covered oaks, beautiful squares, and antebellum architecture, Savannah is perfect for couples looking for a romantic and historic setting. A ceremony in one of the city’s many public parks or historic homes is a timeless choice.
• Blue Ridge Mountains: If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, this mountain range offers breathtaking views and secluded spots that are perfect for a nature-inspired ceremony.
• Cumberland Island: A serene coastal island known for its wild horses, stunning beaches, and quiet atmosphere. This is an ideal location for a private beach elopement.
• Atlanta: For couples who want the convenience of a larger city with access to beautiful parks and botanical gardens, Atlanta offers great options such as Piedmont Park or the Atlanta Botanical Garden.

2. Find Your Elopement Photographer

One of the most important elements of your elopement is capturing the special moments. Choose a photographer who specializes in elopements and understands your vision. Not only will they capture every moment of your special day, but elopement photographers like myself also assist in planning your elopement. 

All of my clients have unlimited access to me via text, email and video chat with regular check-ins. I provide location recommendations and guides based on your vision and needs. I provide packing lists, fully vetted vendor recommendations, timeline planning, and lists of things to do in the area and places to visit for good food and drinks. I also obtain any necessary permits and cover the costs! 

I have planned and photographed countless elopements all over the state and I am here to make planning easy and fun for you! No more stressing out over how to get your wedding license, who can sign it and sitting on hold with park rangers asking about permits. I will assist in all of this and you can sit back and relax!

On your big day, I photograph every part of it. I also take polaroid photos throughout the day and will give them to you at the end of your elopement so you have something to look at day of. I edit and send out sneak peaks within 24-hours of your elopement so you can share the day with family and friends. Your fully edited high-resolution gallery gets delivered within 6-8 weeks!

3. Permits for Public Spaces

If you’re eloping in a state or national park, a public garden, or any other public space in Georgia, make sure you research if any permits are required. Many parks and natural areas do require a permit for weddings and elopements to ensure the ceremony is respectful of the space and doesn’t disrupt other visitors. Fees for permits vary by location. If you are hiring me as your photographer, you get to skip this step! I will obtain all necessary permits and cover the fees for you!

4. Consider Travel and Accommodation

Even though an elopement is smaller and more intimate, travel and accommodations are still key considerations. Georgia offers plenty of cozy cabins, boutique hotels, and Airbnbs perfect for an elopement getaway. If you’re traveling from out of state, be sure to book your lodging early, especially if you’re eloping in a popular area like Savannah or the North Georgia mountains. Once we narrow down your location, I will share my favorite stays near your ceremony location to minimize travel on your elopement day!

If you’re planning an outdoor elopement in a remote location, consider the logistics of getting to and from the ceremony spot. For instance, you may need to plan for transportation to a mountain-top location by renting a vehicle with 4-wheel drive, or plan on getting an uber if you end the day at a vineyard celebrating with lots of drinking!

5. Choose Your Attire

While elopements typically feature a more relaxed dress code compared to traditional weddings, your attire is still an important part of the day. Think about what makes you feel comfortable and confident.

• For Her: Bridal dresses for elopements come in all shapes, sizes, and fabrics, but consider choosing one that is easier to move in if you’re hiking to your ceremony location. Dresses made from lighter fabrics like chiffon or lace can work well in the warmer climate of Georgia. Comfy shoes are also a must for hiking and walking around so you aren’t in pain!
• For Him: Whether it’s a casual button-down shirt, a lightweight suit, or a tuxedo, choose an outfit that suits your personality and the atmosphere of your ceremony. Don’t forget to think about weather, as Georgia’s summers can be hot and humid, especially in the southern regions.

6. Plan for Hair and Makeup

If you want to have your hair and makeup professionally done, it’s a good idea to book a local stylist who is familiar with the climate and can make sure your look lasts throughout the day. For those eloping in remote locations, consider going for a more natural, low-maintenance look, which is easy to touch up on your own. I will provide vendor recommendations if you are wanting professional hair and makeup done on your elopement day!

7. Select an Officiant

Georgia law allows for a variety of officiants to conduct weddings, including ordained ministers, judges, and even a friend or family member who has become ordained online. Choose someone who fits your vision for the day. You can find many officiants who specialize in elopements, often with packages that include everything from ceremony planning to photography. I can also provide recommendations if you want an officiant on your elopement day. 

I am also an ordained officiant! This means that you can bring someone not ordained along to perform your ceremony and I can sign your license afterwards! This can help keep your elopement as small and intimate as possible.

8. Obtain Your Marriage License

No matter where you’re eloping in Georgia, you’ll need a marriage license. Here’s what you need to know:

• Where to Apply: You must apply in person at a county probate court in Georgia. The location of the court varies depending on if you are a GA resident.
• Requirements:
  • Both parties must be present to apply.
  • You need to bring a valid government-issued photo ID (like a driver’s license or passport).
  • If either of you has been previously married, you will need to provide the date of your divorce or the deceased spouse’s death.
  • The license fee varies by county but generally ranges from $56 to $76.
• Waiting Period: There is no waiting period, meaning you can marry immediately after obtaining your license.
• License Validity: Your marriage license will be valid for 30 days after issuance.

9. Add Personal Touches

Though your elopement will be more intimate, that doesn’t mean it can’t be filled with personal touches. Consider writing your own vows, selecting meaningful music, or incorporating traditions that are important to you as a couple.

• Flowers: You can either go with a simple bouquet or opt for something larger and more elaborate. Consider hiring a local florist who specializes in small events.
