Drone Wedding Photo: Benefits, Cost & What Couples Should Know

You’ve probably saved at least one drone wedding photo to your Pinterest board.

The sweeping mountain views.

Tiny silhouettes of you two standing in the middle of the aisle in a courtyard.

Wedding aerial photography that makes your day look like a movie trailer.

If you’re considering adding wedding drone photos to your day, here’s what you need to know, especially when it comes to safety, legality, and getting those epic shots without risking your wedding.

5 Things To Know About Drone Wedding Photography Before You Book

1. What A Drone Wedding Photo Captures

Drone wedding photos do something that traditional photography simply can’t:

It shows the entire story.

• The full mountain range behind your ceremony
• The lake you paddled across together
• The cliffside where you read private vows
• The scale of your location and the intimacy of your moment

Wedding aerial photography gives context. It shows where your love unfolded—not just what it looked like up close.

2. Benefits Of Drone Wedding Photography

When I’m flying the drone, I’m typically physically far away.

That means…
• I can’t hear your private vows
• I’m not standing two feet from your faces
• You get space to actually be present

Drone wedding photography can actually create more intimacy because I’m capturing your moment without hovering over you. This is a great option for the introverts that prefer privacy without worrying about the camera being around!

3. Why Hiring a Licensed Drone Pilot Matters

I am a licensed Part 107 drone pilot through the Federal Aviation Administration.

Flying a drone commercially without certification can result in serious federal fines—sometimes upwards of $10,000+ per violation.

More importantly? It can be unsafe.

As a licensed pilot, I understand:
• Restricted airspace
• National park regulations
• Weather safety
• Crowd safety
• Proper equipment handling

Your wedding day is not the place for someone who just bought a drone for fun.

4. How Much Does a Drone Wedding Photo Cost?

Wedding drone photography cost varies based on:

• Location (some parks require permits)
• Airspace restrictions
• Length of coverage
• Photo only vs. photo + video

For many elopements, drone wedding photos are included in packages (take a peek at my wedding photo packages)—especially when your location deserves to be captured from above.

It’s honestly one of the highest-impact additions you can make to your gallery.

5. When Drone Wedding Photography May Not Be Allowed 🙁

Drone use may be restricted if:
• You’re near an airport
• You’re in certain national parks
• Weather conditions are unsafe
• The venue prohibits it

Part of my job is checking all of that ahead of time so there are 0 surprises.

Drone Wedding Photography FAQs

Are drone wedding photos included in your packages?

In many cases, yes. Drone wedding photography is often included in my elopement packages when the location and airspace allow it. If drone coverage isn’t included by default, it can typically be added on. I’ll always let you know what’s possible for your specific location.

Is drone wedding photography allowed in national parks?

Unfortunately, no. Many national parks restrict or prohibit drone use, while some locations outside park boundaries allow it with proper clearance. As a licensed pilot, I’ll check airspace regulations ahead of time and make sure we’re operating legally and safely. If drones aren’t permitted, I’ll pivot to creative ground angles so you still get stunning imagery.

Do we need a permit for a drone wedding photo?

Sometimes. Permits may be required depending on:
• The state park
• Local government regulations
• Venue rules
• Airspace restrictions
Part of my job is researching all of this before your wedding day so you don’t have to stress about it.

Are drone wedding photos safe?

Yes, when flown by a licensed and experienced pilot. I am certified through the Federal Aviation Administration and trained in airspace safety, weather assessment, and crowd awareness. Safety is always the top priority.

How far away are you when taking a drone wedding photo?

Usually far enough that you won’t even notice me. It’s one of the most intimate ways to be photographed.

What happens if weather cancels drone coverage?

Weather is one of the biggest factors in whether a drone wedding photo is possible. High winds, heavy rain, or unsafe storm conditions can ground the drone and safety will always come first. If that happens, don’t panic. We’ll pivot. I’ll focus on creative ground angles, wide landscape shots, and movement to still capture the scale and emotion of your location. In many cases, we can also adjust timing (like flying earlier in the day or after a storm passes) if conditions safely allow.

My Take On Drone Wedding Photography

If you’re planning a mountain elopement, lakeside ceremony, or anywhere with a breathtaking view, a drone wedding photo might be the thing that turns your gallery from beautiful to cinematic.
